November 21, 2024 — Sacurn Carbon, BionerG, and Open Air are thrilled to announce the successful launch of a pioneering carbon removal initiative in East Africa. This collaborative effort focuses on funding several months of biochar production, providing education, creating opportunities, and implementing farming soil amendments in a region urgently needing support to improve soil health.
Holistic Impact Through Strategic Partnership
Initiated earlier in 2024, the partnership between Sacurn Carbon, BionerG, and Open Air was formed with the vision of making a comprehensive and lasting impact on the environment and local communities in East Africa. By combining their strengths, the organizations have been able to integrate funding, technical expertise, and educational resources to tackle the pressing soil health challenges faced by the region.
Expanding Impact and Capacity
The carbon removal site has demonstrated significant growth and impact since the partnership began. Currently, eight certified operators produce several tonnes of biochar each week, which is then used to create soil amendments. These amendments are distributed across local agricultural fields, greatly enhancing soil fertility and crop yields. This initiative not only contributes to carbon sequestration but also promotes sustainable agricultural practices that benefit both the local economy and the environment.
Building on a Strong Foundation
The collaboration builds on two years of ongoing support and development by Open Air at the East African site. During this time, substantial learning and foundational work laid the groundwork for high-potential growth. BionerG has been instrumental in delivering all necessary technical services and training, working closely with site leaders to overcome local challenges and ensure compliance with ISO14064 standards. Sacurn Carbon’s essential input helped achieve a significant strategic shift, stabilizing the carbon site as a self-sustaining and perpetuating location for ongoing carbon removals.
Achieving a Self-Sustaining Carbon Site
The collective efforts of Sacurn Carbon, BionerG, and Open Air culminated in a pivotal step change that fully realized the site’s potential. The carbon removal site is now a stable, self-sustaining operation that continues to remove carbon effectively, ensuring long-term environmental and agricultural benefits for the region.
A Tribute to Collaborative Potential
This initiative exemplifies the power of collaboration. Sacurn Carbon, BionerG, and Open Air, alongside their dedicated and talented teams, have showcased exceptional resilience and innovation. Together, they have navigated daily challenges to effectively mine and sequester carbon, setting a benchmark for sustainable practices and paving the way for a greener future in East Africa.
